Sivananda Yoga Sadhaka Training Program

A three-year yoga lifestyle training program in the European Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and Ashrams with Training Certification

Real Yoga is the attainment of the highest divine knowledge. It bestows an increased energy, high standard of health. It kills all sorts of pain, misery and tribulations.
Swami Sivananda

Swami Vishnudevananda developed the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and Ashrams to spread the integral teachings of Yoga and to train yoga students and teachers. To date, over 46,000 Yoga teachers worldwide have successfully completed the Teachers’ Training Course (TTC) and over 5,500 the Advanced Teachers’ Training Course (ATTC). During his lifetime, Swamiji inspired many young people to dedicate their lives to this great mission. By the grace of the Masters, the Sivananda Centers and Ashrams have grown and expanded over five decades through the tireless service of a dedicated group of Swamis and Karma Yogis (volunteer workers).

The Sadhaka program

The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers in Europe have created a 3-year training program to help sincere seekers understand and live the yogic lifestyle. The aims of the Sadhaka Training Program are as follows:

  • To train and develop practical and dynamic Yogis.
  • To provide a unique opportunity to serve humanity as a Yoga teacher trained in teaching all aspects of Yoga.
  • To inspire teachers to become future world leaders by sharing the yogic vision of peace within their family, workplace and community.
  • To learn to live a yogic lifestyle within today’s fast-paced world.
  • To become firm in one’s belief that Yoga is a way of life and not just a philosophy.
  • To strengthen and purify the 5 Koshas (sheaths): physical, vital, mental-emotional, intellectual and blissful
  • To improve physical and mental health through expanded awareness.
  • To realize one’s inner potential and latent capacities.
  • To help one to develop self-confidence and a magnetic personality.
  • To conquer fear of the unknown.
  • To learn to face an audience and to communicate with tolerance and respect.
  • To fill the spiritual void in modern society through teaching yoga and practicing selfless service.
  • To experience joy and inner peace. 
  • To learn to struggle for higher things.

Yoga Sadhana 

Asanas, Pranayama, Kriyas, Meditation, Kirtan, Japa, Puja, Spiritual Diary, Guided study of yoga literature

Yoga teaching and further training

Developing confidence and skill as a Yoga teacher is key element of the Sadhaka Training Program.

Advanced Teachers’ Training Course (ATTC) in Europe and a program in India (ATTC, Yatra or assisting in a TTC)

Serving students

Participants are expected to fully participate in the day-to-day operations of the yoga center/ashram. This includes cleaning and maintaining the yoga center and working at the reception, operating computers, etc.

Practical training in the yoga lifestyle

Participants will received continued training in some or all of the following areas: Kitchen, Maintenance, etc.

Language and cultural experience

The training program includes staying in at least 2 different locations of the Sivananda Centers and Ashrams in Europe.

Life in a spiritual community

Sharing your time and the living space at the Center or Ashram with many different people in a spirit of universal spiritual friendship

Yogic hygiene

Healthy diet, regular fasting, practice of yogic hygiene concerning living space, clothing and personal hygiene

Free time, summer break and winter break

One day a week is for free time, Summer and Winter break of 2 weeks duration each

Supervision and end of study project

Bi annual progress report and a End of Study Project at the beginning of the last semester.

Training certificate

Upon successful completion of the Sadhaka Training Program, a Training Certificate will be issued by the European Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. The diploma will contain the following information:

  • List of dates and locations where the training took place.
  • Description of teaching skills acquired during training.
  • Description of content studied.
  • List of additional courses completed.
  • Description of practical skills developed.
  • Description of language skills acquired.
  • Description and evaluation of final study project.


Those interested in participating in the Sadhaka Training Program are required to meet the following criteria in order to be considered for admission:

  • Recent completion of the Sivananda TTC. If not recent (within the past three years), interested persons are required to participate for one month as a volunteer in a Sivananda TTC in Europe.
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Commitment to a yogic lifestyle, i.e. pure vegetarian diet, no tobacco, alcohol, recreational drugs, etc.
  • Willingness to live in simple shared accommodations as provided by the center/ashram.
  • Basic knowledge of English or willingness to learn English
  • No pets, no family members or friends are admitted

Financial conditions

Admission into the Sadhaka Training Program requires en enrolment fee of 300 €. Participants are required to cover the following expenses:

  • Personal travel
  • Travel and living expenses during Summer/Winter Breaks
  • Travel expenses to and from India, plus visa cost.
  • Health insurance
  • Personal expenses, i.e. clothing, personal hygiene items, food requirements outside those provided by the center, etc.

Application and admission

An application for admission into the Sadhaka Training Program must be completed and returned to the local center/ashram. If the applicant is considered suitable, an interview with one of the Yoga Acharyas will then be arranged. Admission into the Sadhaka Training Program will be determined based on the aforementioned procedure.
