Accessible Yoga

A practical 9-day further training programme for yoga teachers

Learn how to adapt a classical asana class to the needs of students with physical disabilities or chronic illness, the elderly, and people with injuries. This can range from teaching slightly modified classes, to entire classes taught in a chair or in a bed.

The course focuses on the practical application of yoga techniques and the psychological insight necessary for helping students with disabilities – no matter what their age to better utilise yoga in their personal healing.

Daily schedule

5:30am        Wake-up
6:00am        Meditation, mantra chanting, yoga reading
8:00am        Accessible Yoga Training
10:00am      Vegetarian brunch
12:00pm      Accessible Yoga Training
3:00pm        Break
4:00pm        Asana and pranayama class
6:00pm        Vegetarian dinner
8.00pm        Group meditation or individual teaching practice

The daily schedule may change occasionally.

Curriculum

  • Yoga Anatomy and Physiology
    • Overview of common medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, respiratory diseases, and heart disease.
    • A review of some of the major impacts of aging on the physical body.
  • Yoga Psychology: How to empower people with disabilities by giving them a deep understanding of the yoga teachings.
  • Essential elements of a modified yoga class
  • Using additional tools such as a chair, a blanket, a strap and a cushion
  • How to create a positive group dynamic among yoga students to support the individual transformational process of yoga
  • Deepen your personal practice of asanas, pranayama and meditation

Language

In English with simultaneous translation into Spanish and German via a wireless translation system.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the training, students receive a certificate recognised by the Yoga Alliance that will enable yoga teachers to teach yoga to students with disabilities. Recognised by the Open International University (http://www.iiihs.org/iiihs).

Course instructor


Jivana Heyman is Director of Teachers’ Training programs at the Integral Yoga Institute in San Francisco, California. After many years of personal training in the gurukula yoga tradition, Jivana focuses on teaching yoga for people with disabilities, and is currently on staff at California Pacific Medical Center's Institute for Health and Healing.
